Lake Burley Griffin is one of Canberra’s most favoured attractions, for both locals and those visiting from interstate.
A centrepiece of the city, Lake Burley Griffin is the ideal place for all types of visitors, no matter if you are a fan of walking, cycling, kayaking, stand up paddle-boarding, or if you just like to sit and observe from the shoreline.
With so many ways to view this beautiful Canberra attraction, here are a few that we recommend.
Hire a GoBoat
This is a great way to see and enjoy Canberra by water.
Seating eight people, chart at your own pace and course, observing the map provided to ensure you don’t miss some of the key attractions.

Take a wander around Kingston Foreshore
The Kingston Foreshore is alive with waterfront food and dining options, and provide another viewpoint of Lake Burley Griffin.
From Local Press Cafe, The Dock and Molto Italian down one end, to Walt & Burley and La Rustica down the other; there are an abundance of dining options that also offer a view overlooking the Kingston Foreshore and dock area. Alternatively, order a takeaway burger from Brodburger and sit lakeside to take in the view.
Stop for a coffee at Elixir Cafe
Elixir Cafe is located right on the shoreline of Lake Burley Griffin, and provides the perfect spot for a coffee with a range of sweet and savoury foods, all set with exquisite views.
Located just steps from the water, it’s the closest cafe to the lake, and provides some of the best views.
This is an extremely popular spot along the lake, and you’ll often find people stopping here after their morning bike ride, or as a stop off on their morning walk to the office.
Elixir not only offers a range of beverages, but you’ll also find a delicious range of sandwiches, pastries, pies and other sweet items.
Take a stroll along the shoreline
Walking the “bridge to bridge” is a favourite with Canberrans, and is one of the best ways to experience what Lake Burley Griffin has to offer.
This is a self guided walk which allows you to explore the landmarks and take a look at the many memorials that line the shore of the lake.
Sites along the way include the National Capital Exhibition, Captain James Cook Memorial, RG Menzies Statue and Gallipoli Reach.
Either make it a mid morning stroll, after work run, or weekend pow wow with friends and grab a coffee along the way too!
Ride your bike
Strap on your helmet and explore the lake via two wheels on a bike!
Cycling is an extremely popular way to view the lake, with many great cycling routes surrounding this area.
With designated bike lanes, the lake route is very cycle friendly.
